Kindergarten Monthly
November 2011
Our monthly newsletter will be posted on our blog, as well as on the Kendall webpage. Please check the blog at the end of the month for the next month’s information! Your child’s teacher will put a week in review on her own classroom blog that will be written with the children and it will go over what was learned that week.
Look What’s Going on…
Literacy
During the course of the school year, your child will be involved in many language arts projects. These projects will be both group and individual efforts. Some will come home and others will stay at school to be used for reading practice. All the projects are designed to extend literature, expose your child to print, and provide enjoyment.
The literacy focus skills for November will be blending/segmenting phonemes, distinguishing between real and make-believe and fiction and nonfiction, and re-enacting or dramatizing the content of stories, songs, poems and plays.
In October we will be learning one sight word each week. The sight words for November are I, like, am, and, go and at. A complete listing of our sight words should have come home with your students in their popcorn tubs.
In November we will be learning about the letters T, P, C and A. Please continue to review the Jolly Phonics sounds as well as our “letter of the week”.
Students will be manipulating words with our word building activities. You will hear about how the kids used their “making words” folders and how they can manipulate words in different word families.
We will also be working on the identifying the short A and long A sound. The children will be enjoying several Thanksgiving books and working on related projects.
Math
Students will be introduced to symmetry as well as continue to practice identifying the basic shapes (circle, square, rectangle, and triangle). Kindergartners will also begin to solve number stories.
We continue to work on putting numbers in order from 1-20, as well as counting, patterning, and sorting. The children will use their knowledge of symmetry so help them to find things in the house or outside that are symmetrical. Thank you for reviewing shapes at home as well.
We will continue to practice writing 1-digit numbers and will use a pan balance. The kindergarteners will also be introduced to the Domino Concentration Game and do an activity to go with the famous book Caps for Sale.
We will continue to work on measurement for the month of November as well as playing number games and discussing probability.
Social Studies & Science
We are beginning a unit on the four seasons. During the unit we will read and discuss books about the seasons and complete complimentary activities.
BRRR!! Keep warm, winter is almost here!
Throughout the months of November and December, in Social Studies, the students will continue to read and discuss books about family, friends and holidays.
Please ask your child to tell you about each one of these stories and the fun activities that went along with them.
Reminders…
· Please remember to send in a note with your child if you plan to change their dismissal location.
· As we continue to focus on handwriting please continue to reinforce correct formation of each letter with your child.
· The LMC at Kendall is a wonderful resource for staff and students. All of the Kindergarten teachers continue to encourage our students to visit the LMC on a regular basis. Students are allowed to check out two books at a time and they may return them when they are finished reading them and then check out two new books. We are excited to have all of the wonderful fiction and nonfiction books in our LMC. We hope your families are enjoying them too!
